100 years of Letzigrund – Zurich celebrates a century full of emotions

One stadium, a thousand memories, a common heart: for the anniversary, the Letzigrund stadium became an emotional meeting place for an entire city.

On 20 September 2025, Letzigrund Stadium was transformed into a lively celebration of the city’s history and the audience from Zurich and the surrounding area was thrilled. 12,000 visitors flocked together to celebrate 100 years of sport, culture and community. Children laughed, families enjoyed adventures, fans cheered – and the stadium itself became the centrepiece of the anniversary.

Celebrations for the whole family

From bouncy castles and obstacle courses to trampolining and climbing: the children’s world offered countless attractions that made children’s eyes light up. The XXL sandpit, hands-on stations and games activities ensured that nobody stood still. In the Athletics Village, sports enthusiasts could test their strength: 50 metre sprints, long jump, ball throwing – all live and hands-on.

Fans of FC Zurich and Grasshopper Club Zurich had their own adventure worlds: Goal wall shooting, face painting, rifle shooting and exclusive club activities made hearts beat faster. Special Olympics Switzerland brought Street Racket onto the pitch and made inclusive action a tangible experience for everyone.

Hot-air balloons rise above the roof of the stadium and recall the history of the Letzigrund.

A day full of highlights and shows

The morning started with a yoga session on the sacred pitch: Around 300 participants practised sun salutations and enjoyed the unique view over the stadium. Throughout the day, stadium tours were offered every 30 minutes, which were fully booked up to the last slot and provided exclusive insights behind the scenes.

On the show stage in the Streetfood Corner, mentalist Dino Dorado, beatboxer Miguel Camero and circus acrobat Corinne Maathis were the stars of the show. An emotional highlight was the “3 FCZ players against 50 kids” duel, which ended in a thrilling 2:2 draw and was met with pure enthusiasm by young and old alike.

Spectacular finale: Hot air balloons over the Letzigrund

The highlight that everyone had been waiting for: Two hot-air balloon flights rose into the sky above the stadium roof, while a third giant balloon in the centre of the pitch allowed everyone to experience the anniversary from lofty heights. The last balloon could only take off at midnight with the permission of Zurich Airport’s Central Tower at around 10.30 pm – an unforgettable moment that made history.

A century of community and passion

The Letzigrund stadium has been more than just a sports stadium for 100 years: it is a meeting place for the community, a place for emotions and inspiration. From FCZ and GCZ to international athletics events and inclusive activities – the stadium remains a lively centre for all generations.

This anniversary has shown that Letzigrund is not just a building, but a symbol of Zurich: of cohesion, passion and innovation. Visitors will remember this day full of highlights, emotions and spectacular balloon moments for a long time to come.
